Former Clemson wide receiver Diondre Overton has passed away, the school announced on Saturday afternoon. Overton, who was a two-time national champion with the Tigers from 2016 to 2019, was 26 years old. The cause of death has not been disclosed.
Overton, a four-star recruit from Page High School in Greensboro, North Carolina, joined Clemson in 2016. Over his four seasons with the Tigers, he recorded 52 receptions for 777 yards and seven touchdowns, playing a reserve role during the team’s national title victories in 2016 and 2018. In his senior season in 2019, he was honored as a permanent team captain.
In a statement posted to X, Clemson Football expressed their grief: "Clemson Football and the entire Clemson Family mourns the passing of Clemson alumnus Diondre Overton. Our thoughts are with his family and friends."
Overton’s former Clemson teammates also paid tribute on social media. Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins shared a heartfelt message on Instagram: "Brotha I miss you already man. I love you 5L....I'm hurting bad bout this right now. Rest Easy Big Play."
In addition to his college career, Overton played professionally in the CFL, the European League of Football, and the UFL. Earlier this year, he was selected by the Memphis Showboats in the UFL dispersal draft.
