What's Open and Closed on Labor Day 2024

Costco and key government offices are among the locations closed on Monday.

Monday is Labor Day, which means many places you might want to visit will be closed due to the holiday. Almost all nonessential state and federal government offices will be closed in observance of Labor Day.

Labor Day started as a state holiday in the late 1800s, with 23 states recognizing it by 1894. That same year, Congress declared Labor Day a national holiday.

According to the Department of Labor, "Labor Day is an annual celebration of the social and economic achievements of American workers." The holiday's origins date back to the late nineteenth century, when labor activists campaigned for a federal holiday to honor workers' contributions to America's strength, prosperity, and well-being.

As Labor Day marks the unofficial end of summer, it's one of the busiest travel holidays of the year. Most places that cater to travelers, like hotels, gas stations, and airports, will be open, but expect them to be crowded. The Transportation Security Administration anticipates this year's Labor Day weekend to be the busiest on record for U.S. airports.

While many government buildings will be closed, plenty of other businesses will remain open.
