Susannah Scaroni has completed her collection of Paralympic medals with a silver finish in the T54 5,000 meters at the Stade de France in Paris. Scaroni, a Tekoa native, clocked in at 10 minutes, 45.18 seconds on Saturday.
Switzerland’s Catherine Debrunner won gold in the event, setting a new Paralympic record with a time of 10:43.62 and narrowly edging out Scaroni. Scaroni, who was aiming to defend the gold she secured in Tokyo three years ago, fell short as Debrunner surged ahead in the final 300 meters.
In addition to her silver medal from Saturday, Scaroni earned bronze in the 800 meters at the 2021 Tokyo Games, making this her third medal in four Paralympic appearances. With events still to come in the 1,500 meters, 800 meters, and marathon, Scaroni has the potential to expand her medal tally.
Saturday’s silver marks the first Paralympic medal of the Paris Games for the current or former athletes from ParaSport Spokane.
