In his first interview of the presidential campaign, Harris explains his departure from certain liberal positions.

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — In her first major TV interview of the presidential campaign, Vice President Kamala Harris defended her pivot from some previously held liberal stances, emphasizing that her “values have not changed” even as she seeks broader consensus.

During the interview with CNN’s Dana Bash, Harris, alongside her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, addressed her shifts on issues such as fracking and the decriminalization of illegal border crossings—positions she previously endorsed. Harris clarified that she no longer supports a ban on fracking, crucial for Pennsylvania's economy, and maintained that there should be repercussions for unauthorized border crossings.

“The core of my policy perspective remains anchored in my values,” Harris stated. “It’s crucial to build consensus and find common ground where we can effectively address issues.”

The interview comes at a time when voters are rapidly acquainting themselves with the Democratic ticket, following President Joe Biden's recent decision to end his reelection campaign. The discussion largely centered on Harris’s more moderate policy positions and Walz’s defense of previous inaccuracies about his background.
