WASHINGTON (AP) — On Monday, Vice President Kamala Harris will join President Joe Biden for a joint campaign event in Pittsburgh, where she plans to advocate for U.S. Steel to remain under domestic ownership. This stance aligns with the White House's earlier opposition to the company's proposed sale to Japan’s Nippon Steel.
According to a Harris campaign official, she is set to emphasize that U.S. Steel should remain domestically owned and operated, reaffirming her commitment to supporting American steelworkers.
This position mirrors Biden's March statement opposing the sale to Nippon Steel, emphasizing the need to “maintain strong American steel companies powered by American steel workers.”
For Harris, this marks a significant policy stance, especially since Biden’s endorsement of her following his reelection bid withdrawal in July. In the early stages of her campaign, Harris has carefully navigated presenting herself as a “new way forward” while demonstrating strong loyalty to Biden and his policies.
The event will include their participation in Pittsburgh’s Labor Day parade, marking their first joint campaign appearance since the recent political shakeup that has reinvigorated Democratic enthusiasm for the 2024 election.
