New York (CNN) — Labor Day falls on Monday, September 2, marking the unofficial end of summer 2024.
As students start heading back to school, many Americans take advantage of this long weekend to host one last summer barbecue or enjoy a trip to the beach.
Labor Day, observed on the first Monday in September, honors the American labor movement and recognizes the contributions workers have made to the US economy.
However, the holiday doesn't mean a break from all errands—many people may still need to visit the bank or pick up last-minute items from the grocery store.
Here’s a look at what’s open and closed on Labor Day 2024:
If you need to make a store run, you’re mostly in luck. Most stores under the Kroger umbrella—including Kroger, Ralphs, Dillons, Smith’s, King Soopers, Fry’s, QFC, City Market, Owen’s, Jay C, Pay Less, Baker’s, Gerbes, Harris Teeter, Pick ‘n Save, Metro Market, Mariano’s, Fred Meyer, and Food 4 Less—will be open during their regular hours.
Major retailers like Walmart and Target will be open as usual. Most CVS Pharmacy locations will also be open, though some may have reduced hours. Walgreens stores will maintain their normal hours, but most of their pharmacies will be closed, except for 24-hour locations and select ones.
However, Costco will be closed.
The United States Postal Service will not be operating on Monday, so you won’t be able to send mail. All UPS services will be closed, except for Express Critical, and only limited locations will be open. FedEx will only have its Custom Critical service operating, with FedEx Office locations on modified hours.
Labor Day is a federal holiday, so banks will be closed, but ATMs and online banking will still be accessible.
The US stock market will also be closed, with no trading on NASDAQ or the New York Stock Exchange.
Federal offices and government buildings, including the DMV and local libraries, will be closed. State and local courts will also not be in session.
