Labor Day, a federal holiday, honors the "social and economic achievements of American workers" and traces its origins to the late nineteenth century when labor activists advocated for a federal holiday to recognize workers' contributions to America's strength, prosperity, and well-being, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.
The first Labor Day was celebrated on Tuesday, Sept. 5, 1882, in New York City. By 1894, 23 more states had adopted the holiday. On June 28, 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed a law making the first Monday in September a national holiday.
Here’s what you need to know about what’s open and closed on Labor Day this year:
**Walmart:** Most Walmart stores will be open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Labor Day, according to a company spokesperson. However, store hours may vary by location, so it's advisable to check with your local Walmart or use the online store directory before heading out.
**Banks, Post Offices, UPS, and FedEx:** All U.S. Postal Service locations will be closed for retail transactions, and there will be no regular mail delivery on Monday, Sept. 2, according to USPS. Major banks such as Capital One, Bank of America, PNC, Truist, CitiBank, and JPMorgan Chase will also be closed, though Capital One Cafes will remain open. UPS will not offer pickup or delivery services on Labor Day, and UPS Store locations may be closed; check with your local store for specific hours. Similarly, most FedEx pickup and delivery services will not be available on Sept. 2, and FedEx Office hours will be modified, so it’s best to confirm with your local store.
