Mariah Carey’s mother Patricia and sister Alison both passed away on the same day over the weekend, PEOPLE confirms.
In an exclusive statement to PEOPLE, the Grammy-winning singer, 55, shared, “My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend. Tragically, my sister also lost her life on the same day.”
Mariah expressed gratitude for being able to spend the final week with her mother before her passing. “I appreciate everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time,” she added.
Details regarding the causes of Patricia and Alison’s deaths have not been disclosed.
Patricia, a Juilliard-trained opera singer and vocal coach, was previously married to Alfred Roy Carey. Together, they had Alison, Mariah, and a son, Morgan. The couple divorced when Mariah was three years old.
Throughout her life, Mariah’s relationship with her mother was complex. In her 2020 memoir, *The Meaning of Mariah Carey*, she described their relationship as a mix of “pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration, and disappointment,” acknowledging the emotional complexities that defined their bond.
Despite their challenges, Mariah and Patricia shared moments of connection, such as their duet of "O Come All Ye Faithful/Hallelujah Chorus" during ABC's *Mariah Carey: Merry Christmas to You* special in 2010. Mariah also dedicated part of her memoir to Patricia, stating, “And to Pat, my mother, who, through it all, I do believe actually did the best she could. I will love you the best I can, always.”
Mariah’s relationship with her sister Alison was similarly fraught. In her memoir, she mentioned that it was "emotionally and physically safer" for her to avoid contact with Alison and Morgan at that time.
